The Data Protection Supervisor has ordered the immediate blocking of the use of the data of users for whom the age of the data has not been verified with certainty against TikTok.

The Authority has decided to intervene in an emergency following the terrible affair of the 10-year-old girl in Palermo. The Garante had already challenged TikTok in December a series of violations: little attention to the protection of minors; easy to circumvent the prohibition, provided for by the same platform, to register for minors under 13 years; little transparency and clarity in the information given to users

Pending the requested feedback with the act of dispute, the Authority has decided however to further intervention today in order to ensure immediate protection to minors registered on the social network present in Italy.

The Authority has therefore prohibited TikTok from further processing of data of users for whom there is no absolute certainty of age and, consequently, of compliance with the provisions related to the age requirement.

The prohibition will last until 15 February, the date by which the Guarantor has reserved further assessments.

The blocking measure will be brought to the attention of the Irish Authority, given that TikTok recently reported that it had set its main establishment in Ireland.
