The interview with Antonio Ieranò, by Proofpoint

One year after the launch of the recovery plan at European level, which led to the PNRR in Italy, 01net carries out an investigation, based on a series of interviews with the main companies operating in Italy in the ICT on their strategy for digitalisation of the

We talk with them about four key themes of digital transformation: resilience, cybersecurity, cloud, environmental and social sustainability and the answers allow you to build the ICT reality participation map for the country’s growth in the digital sense.

And there is one more theme, the fifth: in a spirit of consultation, we ask that Italian entrepreneurs be given an extra idea, capable of producing immediate value in terms of efficiency and competitiveness.

For Proofpoint, Evangelist-Cyber Security Strategy & Senior SE, Antonio Ieranò, responded.

A year after the Recovery Plan, where are we with the real transformation of the country: with what solutions, skills and services do you participate in the missions of the PNRR involving digital?

With its resources, the PNRR represents a strong stimulus to digitalization, first and foremost of the Public Administration and, to follow, of the entire national economy. However, the plan is fundamental because it has long-term effects, but it is an approach that is not tactical, but rather strategic. Organizations are called to review their processes in a digital perspective to improve and make them more efficient, not only in the short term but also and above all in a broader perspective. In this sense, the role of technological vendors is essential, as a guide for customers. The time of the punctual solutions is over, a real advantage at the corporate level, but also of the country system, it will only be possible if the decision makers will be able to question their business priorities, from which they descend the elaboration of the projects and the consequent choice of

2021 was the year in which the theme of cybersecurity landed in all businesses. What concrete prospects did you give for 2022?

Proofpoint’s objective for 2022 is to continue bringing security to the forefront of business discussions. It is a process that has already started in many respects, although much remains to be done. The digitalisation of recent times, in some respects forced, has led many companies to start digital transformation projects. Others are now starting them on the push of the PNRR. All this creates greater complexity in processes and infrastructure, which must also be addressed, and above all, in terms of security. Having more and more digital assets in the company involves issues related to access and their protection. It is no longer possible to deal with them tactically and on time, because this would generate a series of poorly connected silos. It needs a centralized control capability, a comprehensive vision that considers cybersecurity as a fundamental process for the organization’s business, not just an accessory anymore.

The key component of digital transformation is the cloud. What are the choices that Italian companies will have to make in 2022?

The transfer of resources into the cloud is a growing trend among Italian companies, but it is not a simple process. In terms of security, if some aspects may appear simpler because they are entirely or partially entrusted to the cloud provider, others and many remain at the customer’s expense, which must first identify the most critical communication processes between home and cloud resources, and protect them. However, each cloud has its own features, and it is essential that every organization takes the time to analyze its advantages and disadvantages, not only in terms of flexibility and resource optimization, but also in terms of data protection and applications. Like every transition phase, the transition to the cloud (whatever it is) presents its potential criticalities, which need to be identified and addressed at a strategic level and not just technologically.

After the Cop26 it was understood that sustainability, both environmental and social, now affects not only all countries but also all companies. What is your strategy on these issues?

Proofpoint has been providing its services in the cloud for some time, with the aim of offering customers more effective and effective solutions. This also affects the carbon footprint of companies, which switch from proprietary data centers with physical technologies not necessarily of the latest generation to on-demand solutions that by their nature have a reduced environmental impact, also allowing a general reduction in energy consumption. Every business decision has an impact on the environment around us, if we consider them as a whole this impact can become significant. Much has been done on this, but there is still much to be done. The change that awaits us is more cultural than technological or economic, because it provides for the inclusion of factors such as energy consumption and environmental impact among the elements of evaluation for every strategic company choice.

ICT idea of 2022

If you were to offer a single investment (product, solution, methodology) to an Italian company, a choice that could produce an immediate benefit in terms of efficiency and competitiveness, what would your advice be about?

There are many choices available to business leaders who want to improve efficiency and competitiveness. The most lasting benefits could certainly come from a general review of business processes, especially digital. The engine of change is innovation, which can only be real when it concerns the entire business infrastructure, without stopping at individual processes and departments. The same applies to safety, which reveals its real effectiveness only when applied to the whole organisation, as a strategic approach and not as a standalone technological solution. A general review of infrastructure and its dependencies, between sectors and business areas, would certainly allow to rationalise processes making them more effective and efficient, with consequent long-term economic benefits. As always, the key is a strategic approach, which considers the organization as a whole, starting from the mission and then descending on the individual components of the company, at functional and operational level. At the basis of everything there must be a vision of the whole, which considers all the various aspects that impact on the organization, and then go to decline individually, but always in a functional way to the general evolution of the company. In this sense Proofpoint with its holistic vision of safety and its risk-based approach and people centric can offer a valid support to companies that need to frame the issue strategically and not only tactically.
