The interview with Alexander of Felice of OVHcloud. One year after the launch of the recovery plan at European level, which led to the PNRR in Italy, 01net carries out an investigation, based on a series of interviews with the main companies operating in Italy in the ICT on their strategy for digitalisation of the

We talk with them about four key themes of digital transformation: resilience, cybersecurity, cloud, environmental and social sustainability and the answers allow you to build the ICT reality participation map for the country’s growth in the digital sense.

And there is one more theme, the fifth: in a spirit of consultation, we ask that Italian entrepreneurs be given an extra idea, capable of producing immediate value in terms of efficiency and competitiveness.

For OVHcloud the Key Account Manager Alessandro di Felice answered.

A year after the Recovery Plan, where are we with the real transformation of the country: with what solutions, skills and services do you participate in the missions of the PNRR involving digital?

Like OVHcloud, we are convinced that Italy, including through the PNRR missions, is moving in the right direction and is taking control of the sovereignty over data that we have long been firmly supporters of. The Italian Government, by the voice of Minister Colao, has in fact presented a national cloud plan that fits perfectly into the Gaia-X vision and aligns with what already foreseen by France and Germany. In this way Italy plays an increasingly important role in the European data sovereignty strategy.

There are certainly many aspects to be addressed and the resistances to be won, and for this reason OVHCloud intends to cut out a role as protagonist in this game. As the only European cloud provider to compete with the American and Asian giants, our goal is to support governments, organizations and businesses in the digital transformation in three directions that we consider to be fundamental: in addition to the aforementioned data sovereignty according to Gaia-X, the European Commission has

2021 was the year in which the theme of cybersecurity landed in all businesses. What concrete prospects did you give for 2022?

2021 was an uncertain and challenging year for all, due to the pandemic and acceleration of digitization. In fact, the biggest challenge that companies of all sizes will face right from the start is linked to the impact on the business of Covid-19. This clearly leads to the first strategy that companies of all sizes and sectors will have to implement, namely to face new and emerging threats to data security. The second objective is that they will have to train internal staff to make the best use of new technologies.

Three considerations arise from these scenarios:

First of all, the safety of technological solutions, the functionality and characteristics of the technological solutions and, finally, reliability as a fundamental element.

Companies like our If we take only ransomware, in the current year there have been countless attacks on the various industrial sectors. Everything that is technological and digital is highly exposed to hacker action.

The key component of digital transformation is the cloud. What are the choices that Italian companies will have to make in 2022?

In our opinion 2022 will be the year of digital sovereignty, of the “hybrid cloud” and of the “open source” for Italian companies, so we intend to act on several fronts to facilitate this transition. On the one hand, we will offer customers the opportunity to host hardware managed by OVHcloud in their own locations, so that they have an infrastructure that sees edge and on-premise systems integrated with OVHcloud systems.

It will be up to the customer to decide whether and when these devices are connected to the cloud or not and it will also be possible to access the software to install it on their systems and customize it if you want. In addition, we expect a strong acceleration on the PaaS front, which guarantees innovative solutions but at the same time easy to use: in this sense OVHcloud will make available to users a platform of open cloud solutions to adopt and enrich, sharing them with all those who Our partnerships › as for the Database-as-a-Service solutions with MongoDB, Aiven, and for a collaborative development platform with Platform.sh, l • R&D (AI Notebooks or AI)

In general we see the Open source approach as an indispensable driver of growth for us and our ecosystem: from collaboration we cannot ignore to be increasingly competitive.

After the Cop26 it was understood that sustainability, both environmental and social, now affects not only all countries but also all companies. What is your strategy on these issues?

Our commitment to sustainability is clear and has been confirmed by our CEO Michel Paulin also at the recent Ecosystem Experience 2021: by 2030 we commit ourselves to achieving the goal ›net zero emission › for the entire value chain Despite the particularly challenging objective, we are comforted by the fact that we have a completely circular industrial model, efficient

We have always been at the forefront of promoting policies to reduce environmental impact, and recently we have been among the promoters of the Climate Neutrality Pact for Data Centers, a self-regulatory initiative to make them climate-neutral in Europe by 2030. With regard specifically to data centers, it is necessary to operate on several fronts: cooling is one of the main items of energy cost, and the use of water instead of electricity allows to reduce the energy demand in addition to that of the server to about 10% compared to 40-100% But we are not stopping at what has already been achieved: we are testing a prototype of immersion cooling in which we combine immersion cooling technologies with those of water cooling that OVHcloud has been using for almost 18 years.

ICT idea of 2022

If you were to offer a single investment (product, solution, methodology) to an Italian company, a choice that could produce an immediate benefit in terms of efficiency and competitiveness, what would your advice be about?

Our suggestion is to be guided by open standards and direct your technological choices towards dedicated cloud solutions.
