The interview with Michele Porcu by Oracle. One year after the launch of the recovery plan at European level, which led to the PNRR in Italy, 01net carries out an investigation, based on a series of interviews with the main companies operating in Italy in the ICT on their strategy for digitalisation of the
We talk with them about four key themes of digital transformation: resilience, cybersecurity, cloud, environmental and social sustainability and the answers allow you to build the ICT reality participation map for the country’s growth in the digital sense.
And there is one more theme, the fifth: in a spirit of consultation, we ask that Italian entrepreneurs be given an extra idea, capable of producing immediate value in terms of efficiency and competitiveness.
For Oracle, the Vice President, Business Value Services & Strategy EMEA, Michele Porcu, responded.
A year after the Recovery Plan, where are we with the real transformation of the country: with what solutions, skills and services do you participate in the missions of the PNRR involving digital?
The transformation of the country is in progress but has developed from different starting points, and proceeds at different speeds depending on the sectors. For example, the Public Administration was certainly behind the private in the field of technology and of enabling to smart working, but it had a very strong acceleration. Moreover, there is a great excitement in the drafting of the digital agenda and all the planning for a real digital transition of the public administration that I hope will not stop, thanks to the impulse given by the Government Dragons and the funds of the PNRR.
In large companies, the way of managing business processes has been transformed, but the starting situation was already favourable: for example, it was understood that digitizing the front end • sales and marketing • to cope with the closures of physical outlets during In SMEs, the accumulated delay is likely to be short of both technological and foreign competitiveness, but I am sure that not only the PNRR but a different way of tackling the challenges we have experienced and that in some respects we are still living from
At Oracle we are present across all missions of the PNRR involving digital, dealing mainly with data management ., an element that characterizes us as the ideal and reference partner of any digital transformation of type …
2021 was the year in which the theme of cybersecurity landed in all businesses. What concrete prospects did you give for 2022?
Indeed 2021 was the year in which the company realized the strategicity of cybersecurity › is now a theme for the attention of Top Management and Board of Directors, not only the information systems Every 11 seconds, one enterprise is the victim of ransomware, and Italy is the sixth country due to the frequency and extent of the attacks, with an average ransom required that stands at 250,000 euros but with peaks of a few million. In fact, most of these crimes … that occur through the cloud… can be avoided, because they are largely perpetrated by human error or inappropriate configurations. Oracle applies to its Cloud a security …by design, at all levels… Hardware, Firmware and Software… or designed to be present by default and automated to reduce all these risks.
The five safety principles of Oracle that guide the design and development of our products are:
Easy to use: we know that we need to make people’s lives constantly easier and simplicity is difficult to add after developing solutions to problems Transparent security mode always active (‘Always on’), in Oracle’s Cloud, with integrated controls. Safety should not be a work-in-progress. Prescriptivity: it requires preventive measures to help reduce the possibility of human error. Everyone makes mistakes, so a security network is important. Automation: a key theme in Oracle, and fundamental in the field of security. Oracle’s goal is to automate as many routine tasks as possible • often a source of a large number of errors and incorrect configurations • and allow people to devote time to higher level problems. Unified tools and controls: To make everything easier, Oracle Cloud Security tools are available within the console integrated into our Cloud, which means looking for answers in one place.
The key component of digital transformation is the cloud. What are the choices that Italian companies will have to make in 2022?
As already anticipated in the first response, I believe that the key choice to make, for companies of every size, order and grade, is to become more agile in every business environment, and the cloud and the most appropriate model for the delivery of digital services. This will not be possible for everyone at the same time, of course, but it will have to be the final goal of a journey in order to be able to equip itself with the intrinsic innovation enabled by the cloud itself
The cloud is obviously not the solution to all challenges, but it makes it easier and more affordable to reach • the transformation into a modern perspective of your business and •value chain in general. For example, it allows experiments on new products/services/technology, planning and’scenario modelling’ to react quickly to the change of traditional business models and suppliers that may fail due to unpredictable external causes, enabling people to work in ways
After the Cop26 it was understood that sustainability, both environmental and social, now affects not only all countries but also all companies. What is your strategy on these issues?
Oracle has always been committed • as I think most of the ICT sector • on sustainability issues, because we are aware that only if everyone engages, the planet and society in which we live and work will
At the environmental level, we have set ourselves the goal of being totally… carbon-free… or better, only 100% renewable energy, by 2025, but already today many of our offices and all the data centers in which the cloud regions are hosted.
At the social level, we are engaged in the topics of diversity and inclusion actively, for example we participated in the G20 Business Advisory on Women Empowerment contributing to the important “Manifesto” issued in that forum, with ideas and ideas taken from our
In addition to all this, with our technology and cloud we contribute to various initiatives that I consider worthy, such as the spread of vaccines in Africa, with the Tony Blair Institute, or research on Covid variants with Oxford University, or on the safeguard of
ICT idea of 2022
If you were to offer a single investment (product, solution, methodology) to an Italian company, a choice that could produce an immediate benefit in terms of efficiency and competitiveness, what would your advice be about?
It is difficult to highlight one thing: I think that modernising and making supply chains more agile is particularly important to quickly adapt to new business paradigms and sudden changes in the scenario; but perhaps even more important you have to invest in people, true strategic asset
