It is 1993 when four founding members create GMDE, a service dedicated to supporting the publishers of newspapers in the use and evolution of new digital publishing systems.
The high-tech activities are also accompanied by traditional pre-press tasks.
The first GMDE turn came in 2000, when RCS entrusted the company with the worldwide tele-transmission of the Corriere della Sera pages. The GMDE team then decided to start looking carefully at the world of the Web. Meanwhile, the proposal for technological editorial support also extends to periodicals and bookstore publishing.
In 2015, the company further expands its horizons, embracing the industry market, supporting companies in all sectors in communication activities and information management.
Today GMDE employs 42 people and expresses a turnover of over 6 million euros. The technological infrastructure is distributed on three different sites: the headquarters, a site within a data center Equinox and a space in the farm Vodafone of Rome. The IT infrastructure located in Agrate is used for internal services, backup and software development.
The component hosted at Equinox is dedicated to providing services to customers and, more recently, also those via the Web. The site at the farm of Vodafone is used to guarantee business continuity to publishers.
GMDE’s problem faced with Nutanix
Mauro Toselli, Cto di GMDE, tells how the company decided to make an important leap in quality, with the aim of always ensuring the best for customers but also to open new opportunities for the future.
For this reason, GMDE needed higher performance but also a more sustainable level of expertise required for the management of the entire system, so that the staff could dedicate themselves to the development of new solutions and customer support.
After a thorough scouting and testing phase lasting over four months, where both private and public cloud solutions are considered, GMDE chooses to marry Nutanix technology at the end of 2019, the one that best guaranteed the development of future activities and
Nutanix solution for GMDE
GMDE installs, at the data center of Equinix, the strategic IT site for the delivery of services to customers, six Nutanix NX 8155 G7 appliances, with 2 Cpus and 512 Gbytes of RAM memory each. For storage, a hybrid solution, disks and SSDs is chosen, orchestrated in a wise way by Nutanix software.
GMDE today has a infrastructure adapted to new needs and to ensure a solid future but above all to ensure the performance and continuity required by the great publishers.
The advantages for the IT team of Gmde were evident, with a saving of the times and operating costs that exceeds 50%. Although machines are physically placed on-premise within a data center, the Nutanix solution is open to any form of cloud, leaving GMDE the flexibility required for future developments. According to Toselli, the end user has also been able to benefit from the advantages brought by the hyper-convergence Nutanix noticing a greater fluidity and reduced intervention times in case of requests for assistance.
The next step, already foreseen by the company management, is the extension of the information system at the customer’s premises thanks to the Nutanix Prism solution, currently used by GMDE and being tested for this new development.
