We talk with them about four key themes of digital transformation: resilience, cybersecurity, cloud, environmental and social sustainability and the answers allow you to build the ICT reality participation map for the country’s growth in the digital sense.

And there is one more theme, the fifth: in a spirit of consultation, we ask that Italian entrepreneurs be given an extra idea, capable of producing immediate value in terms of efficiency and competitiveness.

A year after the Recovery Plan, where are we with the real transformation of the country: with what solutions, skills and services do you participate in the missions of the PNRR involving digital?

I believe that no one has any doubt about the importance of the PNRR, at least for the stakes. It is, in fact, the transformation and development of the country system in a long-term perspective. However, it is difficult to make a one-year budget. The impulse given by the government was certainly of weight, there is the work of a directional cabin and the same market, in general, seems to me in turmoil. The elements that can be successful are obviously many but among them, to excel, are the technological skills. And that’s where Kyndryl intends to contribute with his own weight.

What we make available to the public administration and to the countless companies in every industry sector, the result of decades of solid partnership, are the services useful for the modernization of IT.

Modernization that, in the first place, passes through the adoption of cloud models, private or public. It can accelerate the digitisation processes. But not only that.

Our goal is also to enable companies to set up a data strategy. An element from which a modern and competitive business cannot ignore. Here too it is a question of skills, of capacity in the use of those technologies which, on the one hand, allow data engineering • i.e. the collection, processing and storage of data • and on the other hand the data science

Other aspects also contribute to our contribution to the PNRR. For example, edge computing solutions can be a strong contribution to issues of control and management of large national infrastructures. Together with the data science, the edge can be a primary solution for improving safety for citizens and improving the production processes of companies. The list can continue by quoting solutions that support new work patterns, enabling employees to work in distributed mode with access to all the tools they need. And all this can be enhanced with the use of machine learning and automation-based user support systems.

2021 was the year in which the theme of cybersecurity landed in all businesses. What concrete prospects did you give for 2022?

For Kyndryl cybersecurity cannot be tackled in a way that is disjoined by cyber resilience. The link between them is the need to interpret the theme, or the problem, in a holistic way knowing that it is a process that has no solution of continuity and does not travel to watertight compartments. With 2022, attention to these solutions will be accelerated and it is no coincidence that Kyndryl has a dedicated practice . Security and Resiliency its name… which has the strength of a sales, design and delivery organisation.

Kyndryl’s attention focuses on three main domains. The first is the security with data protection, and more generally the IT environments of our customers. By providing solutions for prevention, control and response to attacks, control of identities and accesses. And perimeter security in hybrid and multicloud environments. The second looks at the reactive capacity towards cyberattacks; it develops processes, procedures, organization and roles that come into play in these cases. Finally, the last concerns solutions that can automatically restore IT services affected by a cyber attack by departing from data that is properly protected and not corrupt.

The key component of digital transformation is the cloud. What are the choices that Italian companies will have to make in 2022?

It is important, according to Kyndryl, that companies define a clear strategy for modernising IT and data lifecycle management. Opportunities are endless ranging from cloud environment flexibility to data exploitation as a differentiating value for core business. The obstacles certainly do not fail. Think of the skills required to get the most benefit from the cloud. They are specific and call into question the knowledge of cloud services, integration, data engineering technologies, management. The processes of governance and sourcing should not be forgotten in order not to slow down or limit the opportunities for business innovation.

That is why among the important choices there is also that of the partner with whom to undertake the massive digitalization journey. Its role is to accompany a sustainable transformation of ‘enterprise grade’. Moreover, that it avoids risks to the business and that it maintains openness towards future technologies. Companies will have to avoid lock-in and maintain control points on the evolution of their IT that they consider strategic for their core business

After the Cop26 it was understood that sustainability, both environmental and social, now affects not only all countries but also all companies. What is your strategy on these issues?

In my opinion, the health emergency that has hit us so badly is an opportunity to rethink the way we work, produce goods and services, exchange information with each other. We need a broad-based and long-term strategy, which will probably see the replacement of many analogue processes with digital ones.

Let us not forget that sustainability means reducing CO2 emissions. And this can also be achieved through a series of actions where digital technologies play a key role. How to communicate without necessarily having to move, work from anywhere, increase online services and so on. Not only that.

Technology has the potential to expand the benefits that will become essential. Think only of the use of analytics and machine learning to plan the production and distribution of goods and products with consequent optimization of consumption and reduction of environmental impact. In short, digitisation identifies an important ingredient, if not the main one, with which to help stop potentially irreversible processes. Allowing us to continue creating services and markets, of course, in a digital key. Without this, we want to replace other instruments or to oppose the development of a necessary culture that will make us all increasingly aware of the problem and responsible for the need to safeguard the environment.

ICT idea of 2022

If you were to offer a single investment (product, solution, methodology) to an Italian company, a choice that could produce an immediate benefit in terms of efficiency and competitiveness, what would your advice be about?

In short, I would indicate the need to focus on your business and to use IT not as an end but as a means of differentiation. The choice of platforms to adopt must be made with a buy vs make approach. By favouring the composition and integration of technological services and the on-boarding of skills and collaborations from the ecosystem. In this sense, cloud and data science are definitely the priorities that every type of company must pay attention to. The first as a source of immediate benefit, the second of medium term.
