5G is an enabling technology of fundamental importance in the future of autonomous and sustainable transport. It provides the connectivity and reliability necessary to introduce trucks and autonomous trucks safely on public roads.
That is the conviction of Ericsson, Telia and Einride. And these are the conditions from which the three companies start to develop this pilot project based on 5G. Technology, this, which with its high transmission capacity and low latency will be central to future solutions for the transport sector.
Ericsson is one of the most active telecom service providers in research and testing of 5G solutions. Einride, for its part, defines itself as “The intelligent movement company” and has given itself the mission to transform the transport sector. Like the other two companies, the important telephone operator Telia Company, among the leaders in Scandinavian countries, has roots in Sweden.
The electric truck with autonomous driving
And it is in Sweden that this pilot project is being staged. Where the protagonist is Einride’s T-pod, the first truck specifically designed for electric propulsion and autonomous driving. A sustainable, economic and safe means, with the aim of making many conventional road transport solutions obsolete.
The T-pod driver-free vehicle in Einride is continuously operating in DB Schenker’s logistics facilities in Jönköping, Sweden. Here, Ericsson Radio System and Ericsson Cloud Core 5G solutions deliver the high performance connectivity needed for operation.
This is the first commercial installation of Einride’s AET (Autonomous Electric Transportation) system. It is a project that aims to create an ecosystem for fully electric autonomous transport. An ecosystem that can innovate the way fleet management is conducted.
Einride’s T-pod and the autonomous transport system powered by 5G technology can evolve into solutions of great interest. Potentially, companies announce, they are able to replace more than 60% of the current road transport. They can therefore be an economically competitive and sustainable alternative.
